How to Choose a Color to Paint or Stain Cabinets

When it comes time to refinish or repaint your cabinets, invariably, the question of color will be one of the questions which come up. Because we’re in the business, we are familiar with all of the possible colors. People ask us all the time to advise them on the selection of the color that will be right for the room. Today, we’re going to talk about how to choose a color for your kitchen cabinets, and what you can expect.

This is a beautiful contrast, but needs to be refinished often because it’s located in an area of high moisture content.

Second verse, same as the first

Some people choose to refinish their cabinets using the same color as they were before they were refinished. The benefit of this is that you know what to expect from the old color. It will look just like it did before, except a lot better because it has a new finish.

What else is nearby?

The other architectural or decor elements in a kitchen or bath can help provide color options for the cabinets. Examples are wall paint, countertops or tile. By choosing a color which will complement and coordinate with the other elements in the kitchen and bath, it will give the room a cohesive look. The effect can be quite stunning.

Look around

Do you have a neighbor who has a cabinet color you particularly admire? Start looking around for colors and styles which represent your taste. If you see them in person, take a photo. If you see cabinet colors or wood colors you like online, save them. You don’t have to rush into choosing a color, but having an awareness of what is out there and what you love will help center your thoughts for when the concepts become a reality.

Light vs. dark

A lighter cabinet color will bring more light into play. A dark color will create a more somber, dramatic mood. Consider the feeling you wish to convey with your cabinet color. The color tone is way more important than people realize.

Consult an expert

After you’ve had some time to think about what would look good and what you might want, make an appointment for a consultation with an expert in wood refinishing. By gathering ideas ahead of time, you’ll have a good sense of some of the directions you can take in wood colors. By consulting with an expert, you’ll learn about trends, treatments, and other options. Then we can talk about finishes and hardware, as well.

Our goal is for our customers to be as happy as possible with their finished cabinets. By doing a little ‘homework’ ahead of time, you’ll have a vastly superior awareness of your tastes and what is readily available. We can help you fill in the blanks so that you’re fully informed before you make a color choice for your cabinets.
