Painting Your Exterior This Winter

Once the holidays are over, it will be a new year and a new decade. People will be reviewing the events of the last decade and making plans for the coming decade. It’s an inspiring time for many people because the ‘zero years’ are ones in which we can all start anew. If you want to paint your home, a zero year would be a good time to do it. Not only will it start the decade with a fresh new look, but it will also offer protection from the elements, from vermin and insects. Here are some ways to tell if your home exterior needs to be painted this winter:

Flaking, peeling, chipping

These are the trifecta of reasons that preparation is such an essential part of a good paint job. Painting over flaking, peeling, and chipping without prepping and priming will cause the new paint to join forces with the old. Instead of adhering to your home and protecting it, the fresh paint starts to flake, peel, and chip along with the old! Flaking, peeling, and chipping is also the result of long, brutal summers, which consist of sun and heat. In fact, as a rule, the sunny side of a house is the first one to start having problems.

Chalking

Just like the paint on a car can oxidize if it’s left unwaxed, house paint can chalk in the same manner. Paint surfaces have to be prepped, and then, once painted, they have to be appropriately sealed. Not only that, but only high-quality paint should be used for house painting. A lower grade of paint will almost certainly promise premature chalking or worse.

Fading

Fading paint makes a home look tired. It’s a depressing look for even the most beautiful home, and one house with faded paint can put a blight on the whole neighborhood. Fading is the deterioration of the paint on a molecular level, and it will change the color of the home, too. Winter is an excellent time to paint because the surfaces of your home are cooler. Both sun and heat will dry the paint incredibly quickly during the painting process. Cooler weather allows the paint to dry more slowly, making it a more desirable time to paint.
